Here’s a quick breakdown of the pros and cons of Six Star Whey Protein:

  • Consists Of Fast Digesting Whey Proteins
  • Features A High BCAA Content
  • Low Fat
  • Added Creatine Monohydrate
  • Value-Conscious
  • Contains Fillers
  • Contains Artificial Flavoring
  • The Whey Protein Blend Is Mostly Low-Quality Whey Concentrate
  • Contains Two Artificial Sweeteners

Whey protein powder can make a big difference in your ability to achieve your training goals. After all, you need more protein than people who aren’t overly active.

Whey protein is the highest quality protein available, and it’s fast digesting. One or two shakes on top of your meals help you meet your daily protein requirements.

Additionally, protein powder is the ideal solution when you’re faced with a long day at work. You may not have time for a meal. Yet, you will usually have time for a shake.

Here’s what you should consider before buying whey protein:

What Types Of Whey Protein Are There?

There are three types of whey protein. They are:

Whey Concentrate – This is the most common whey protein. Whey concentrate is 60-80% protein with the rest consisting of carbs, lactose, and fat.

Whey Isolate – This is the highest quality type of whey protein. It has a protein content of 90% with little carbs, fat, or lactose.

Whey Hydrolysate – This is whey isolate protein that’s broken down into smaller particles for faster digestion. All forms of whey proteins digest fast but hydrolyzed whey digest the fastest.

How Much Protein Am I Getting Per Serving?

When buying whey protein, look for at least 20g protein per serving. Some products go as high as 30g per serving. Six Star Whey Protein provides 32g per scoop.

How Many Carbs, Sugar, And Sodium Does It Have?

If you’re following a Keto, Paleo, or another low-carb diet, you’ll want to make sure your whey protein is low carb. There’s no reason a whey protein should have more than 2-3g total carbs. Sugar should be 1g or less. Additionally, the sodium content should be under 80mg per serving.

Does It Contain Fillers And Artificial Ingredients?

When shopping for a whey protein, look at the ingredients panel. It should have very few ingredients. Is it loaded with gum blends and maltodextrin? What about artificial flavor, and artificial sweeteners? Always look for a protein that has the fewest possible added ingredients.

How Does It Taste?

Some users don’t worry about taste or texture. Still, if you drink 1-2 shakes a day, there’s no reason they shouldn’t taste good. A whey protein should mix easily with no clumps. Additionally, it should taste good even in water.

Six Star uses a Whey Protein Plus Blend consisting of whey concentrate, whey isolate, 97% whey isolate, and hydrolyzed whey. One scoop provides 32g protein. This is a fast digesting whey blend. That makes it a great post-workout choice. It’s also a good option for your first protein source of the day.

However, there’s a couple of problems here. First, the protein is a prop blend. There’s no breakdown of how much of each type of whey the blend contains. This means it could be almost all whey concentrate, the lowest quality whey. Second, it takes a 52g scoop to provide 32g protein.

What’s the other 20g?

There’s added creatine monohydrate, and that’s good. Yet, that’s only 2.5g. That means the rest of the product is fillers, carbs, and fat. One scoop contains 8g total carbs, 2g sugar, and 3g fat. Also, there’s 100mg cholesterol, and 120mg sodium. All in all, this is not a premium quality protein powder.

This blend consists of 5.2g glutamine and 7.4g BCAAs. This blend may be misleading to some users. They’re not added to make the product better. The glutamine and BCAAs are naturally occurring in the whey protein. Still, this does have a high BCAA/glutamine content. That’s good news for anyone trying to build lean muscle.

BCAAs are three of the nine essential amino acids. That means they must be supplied by the diet and supplements. This is because the body cannot make them. In addition, they make up 30% of the protein found in muscle tissue.

The BCAAs, especially leucine, are involved in protein synthesis stimulation. That’s the trigger for muscle growth. BCAAs also support recovery and help prevent muscle protein breakdown.

Glutamine is an amino acid that’s made by the body. It’s the most dominant amino in muscle tissue. It makes up 60% of the protein found in the muscles. That means that glutamine and BCAAs are almost 100% responsible for the protein in your muscles.

Like BCAAs, glutamine supports recovery and helps prevent muscle protein from breaking down. It’s also involved in protein synthesis. This blend, combined with the added creatine, is the best thing about this product.

As noted, there’s 2.5g creatine per scoop. Of course, creatine is the most proven muscle builder on the planet. Creatine supports water-based pumps by pulling water into the muscles. It improves endurance through the ATP energy system. It’s also known as a muscle builder. Finally, it supports strength and power.

The glutamine/BCAA/creatine blend takes an average quality protein powder and makes it dramatically better. The downside to this protein is all the artificial ingredients and fillers. Still, it’s a value-conscious product that you can find anywhere.

After searching online, here are some reviews for Six Star Protein. Some are positive reviews that are based on the value of the product. There are a few that won’t use anything else.

However, some reviews are negative. Several users don’t like the taste. Six Star is not a protein that is used by elite athletes. The reason is the high whey concentrate content. It’s also the added fillers and artificial ingredients. Still, to the average user, it’s a decent choice for the price.

Here are some good alternatives for users that don’t want to use Six Star Whey Protein.

Here’s a protein that competes directly with Six Star Whey Protein. Super Advanced Whey Protein has a similar nutrient profile. One scoop provides 30g whey protein from a blend of whey concentrate and whey isolate. Like Six Star, there’s added creatine. In this case, there’s 1.5g, plus 1,5g taurine, and 1.5g glutamine.

Body Fortress also has 8g carbs with 4g sugar, 5g fat, and 110mg sodium. While Body Fortress is similar to Six Star as far as quality, it is a better value. That makes it a better choice for many value-conscious users. In terms of taste, that’s dependent on user preference.  However, as far as dosing, Six Star is a better option.

Here’s a well-known brand that’s highly regarded as a superior product. This competes with Six Star and other value brands like Body Fortress. 100% Whey Protein provides 24g of protein per serving.

Like Six Star, this uses a prop blend. In this case, it consists of whey isolate, whey concentrate, and whey peptides. Unlike Six Star, the first protein on the list is whey isolate. In a prop blend, the ingredients are listed by order of weight. That means there should be more isolate protein than anything else. While we don’t know the by-gram breakdown, that makes this a superior quality product.

Yet, there’s no added creatine and fewer BCAAs per serving (5.5g). Also, this contains artificial ingredients.  Still, if you want a good whey protein, this is a better choice. There are only 3g carbs, 1g sugar, and 1.5 g fat.

Finally, with Six Star, there’s a 20g difference in the scoop size to protein grams. With Optimum, there’s only a 6g difference. That means this product has fewer other macronutrients, less fillers, and more protein.

Six Star Whey Protein Plus advertises a high protein content per serving with 32g per scoop. It also advertises extra ingredients such as creatine, and a high glutamine/BCAA content. It’s a value-conscious product that you can find almost anywhere.

Still, Six Star Whey Protein Plus contains fillers and artificial flavors and sweeteners. It has a lot of carbs, sugar, and fat for a protein powder. Additionally, while it does have 32g protein per scoop, it uses a prop blend. In this case, whey concentrate is the first ingredient. That could be the source of most of the protein in this product. The problem is, thanks to the prop blend, we don’t know.

However, are you a value-conscious user? With Six Star Whey Protein Plus, you get a decent quality protein. You also get added muscle builders, all at a value price. If that fits your goals, Six Star Whey protein can be hard to beat!
