The number of calories you burn while on a treadmill will depend on several factors. These include walking speed, distance, and incline settings.

For reference, a treadmill can burn approximately 300-400 calories per hour if walking, and 600-1200 calories per hour if you are jogging or running. These numbers are estimates only. They will vary based on personal factors such as sex, age, and workout intensity.

Of course, your calorie intake and macronutrient breakdown are one key to your efforts to lose weight.

The amount of time you should spend on a high-weight capacity treadmill to lose weight depends on experience. We’ve seen the factors that go into weight loss.

As noted above, you can increase your speed gradually while you increase your time. Ideally, 30-minute sessions are a great place to start your weight loss efforts.

Can you go longer if you want to?

Absolutely. The better the shape you get into, the longer you can walk on a treadmill. Finally, increase the intensity by increasing speed and incline.

First, check with your medical professional before starting any exercise program.

Second, have the right gear. That begins with a pair of supportive walking shoes.

Next, it may be a good idea to powder your inner thighs to avoid chafing or bruising.

Before beginning, have water or a sugar-free sports drink available. Staying hydrated is crucial to your success.

Plan to use your treadmill 3-4 days a week. Consider some form of resistance training 2-3 days.

Finally, remember weight loss begins in the kitchen.

This is a beginner treadmill workout.

Begin by setting the timer for 10 minutes. Pick an easy speed, say 1 to 1.5 miles per hour, and simply walk.

Focus on good form. Chest up, shoulders back, take purposeful strides.

Your goal is to be able to walk on your treadmill for 20 minutes at 2.0 miles per hour.

You’ve reached your goal of 20 minutes. Congratulations!

Now, your new goal will be 20 minutes at a speed of 2.3 miles per hour and a .5% incline.

Again, set the treadmill timer. If your treadmill does not have one, use your watch.

For the first 5 minutes, keep your speed around 1 to 1.5.

After the 5 minutes, increase to your target speed and incline.

By this time, you have made good progress. You’re walking at a reasonable speed for 30 minutes.

It’s time to up your treadmill intensity.

Stay at 30 minutes. Warm-up for 5 minutes as you did in Treadmill Workout # 2.

Your goal speed is 2.8 miles per hour, and your incline goal is level 2.

These treadmill workouts assume you aren’t following online trainer-led workouts. Certainly, you have that option if you choose a treadmill with iFit or something similar.

In the meantime, Treadmill Workout # 4 kicks up the intensity and your responsibility to manage your own workouts.

Begin by staying at 30 minutes.

Your goal speed will be 3.3 miles per hour after your 5-minute warm-up. Your goal incline is level 3.

From here, work to increase incline and speed on your treadmill. Based on how you’re doing with the goals I have provided, set weekly goals for yourself.

Your end goal will be up to you. Some people get fit enough to use a high incline with a top speed of 4 to 4.5 miles per hour. Some people choose to increase time as well as incline and speed.

This assumes you are walking briskly on your treadmill. Of course, you can decide you want to try jogging or running on a treadmill.

Make sure you have the running area if you choose to jog or run. Not every treadmill for big people is designed for running.

What I want to instill in you is the ability to look at your fitness level. Then, to make the appropriate adjustments to extend your progress.

There’s a point to be made here. As noted, one treadmill, the Ksports Treadmill, offers a full-body cardio and resistance workout.

First, you can use the sit-up bars and ab mat for a good warmup and ab workout. Next, you can walk or jog on the treadmill.

Remember that this is a compact treadmill. That means that anyone with a big stride will have problems running.

Finally, you can finish with a full-body dumbbell workout.

No doubt you’ve heard of HIIT or High-Intensity Interval Training. This is an intense form of training designed for experienced users.

First, HIIT can be down on any type of exercise equipment. Many people simply sprint using no equipment.

You can work up to HIIT treadmill workouts. If you are an overweight person with serious fitness goals, HIIT-style workouts on your treadmill can be your end goal.

Here’s how it works.

After warming up on the treadmill, set the speed for the most you can handle for 20 seconds.

After 20 seconds, slow it down to a comfortable speed for 1o seconds. Do this 10 times.

Increase intensity by upping the number of times to 20. You can also move up to all-out for 30 seconds with 20 seconds of rest in between.

Finally, some heavy-duty treadmills, such as the 3G Cardio Runner Treadmill, are made for HIIT workouts.

Again, as noted, depending on the treadmill you chose, you have the option to use a fitness app.

Otherwise, follow the tips provided above.

If you are uncertain of an end goal, here’s our tip. Go with a top walking speed of 4.3 miles per hour with a level 7 incline.

In terms of time on the treadmill, it should be 30 minutes minimum.

For any workout you do, another goal is to reach the ideal target heart rate for burning fat.

No doubt your goals are fat burning and cardiovascular health.

During treadmill workouts, you should try to stay in a target heart rate zone of 50 and 85% of your maximum heart rate. This is according to the American Heart Association.

You can get a reasonable estimation of your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. If you are 40 years old, this estimate would place your maximum heart rate at 180 beats per minute.

This puts your target heart rate zone between 90 and 153 beats per minute.

If you use your treadmill at a light to moderate pace, as detailed in the Best Treadmill Workouts above, you can stay in this target zone.

The target exercise zone you work in depends on your goals.

As noted, most big people that use a treadmill are trying to burn maximum calories, get in better shape, and lose weight. This would mean a moderate aerobic energy zone.

The aerobic zone is 60 and 80% of your maximum heart rate. For our example 40-year-old, this puts their heart rate between 108 and 144 beats per minute.

Near the end of every treadmill workout, remember to cool down.

Like your warmup, allow 5 minutes to walk at a slower pace so your heart rate comes back down.

Look for a 15-20 beat per minute drop right after you stop the treadmill.

No doubt many heavy people wonder whether or not treadmills are a good choice. This is a reasonable concern. One of the first things people worry about is their joints, specifically the knees.

Most overweight people are afraid that walking might strain their knees and ankles. Some big people may already be in constant pain. Your knees might already hurt even without exercising.

However, light exercise such as walking on a treadmill, could help make your knees and joints feel better.

A clinical study published in the Journal of Biomechanics found the following results. Overweight people didn’t strain their knees while walking on a treadmill at a reasonable speed any more than leaner users. (1)
